Standard tuning from the 4th string is G4 C4 E4 A4. It is a re-entrant tuning: the G string sits higher than the C next to it.

How to use it

Pluck G4, then C4, E4 and A4, one string at a time. When the needle sits in the green center (within ±5 cents), you’re in tune. Tap a string name to hear its reference tone and lock the tuner to that string.

What makes ukulele tuning different

Standard tuning is re-entrant, or "high G": the 4th string, G, is higher than the C string right next to it. Strum across the strings and the notes don’t simply climb from low to high; the high G comes before the low C.

Some players use "low G" instead (G3 C4 E4 A4), with the 4th string an octave lower. The note names don’t change, so chord shapes stay the same. This page only has the high-G preset and may read G3 as the C string, so for low G open the main tuner page, choose "Chromatic (any note)" and tune to G3.

Care and practice

New strings stretch for a while and keep going flat. Retune before every session until they settle.

Dropping a high-G string all the way to G3 leaves it far too slack. If you want low G, buy a dedicated low-G string, which is thicker.

G4 and A4 are two semitones apart, so the 4th string at the 2nd fret gives the same A4 as the open 1st string. Play both together; when the wobble slows until you can hardly notice it, the two strings agree.

The 1st string, A4, is the reference note itself. Change Reference A4 in the settings and this string’s target becomes that exact value, with the other strings following by the same ratio. When you play with other instruments, agree on the reference first.

Common mistakes

Tuning the 4th string an octave low. In standard tuning it should be G4, higher than the C4 next to it. If this page reads your 4th string as C, it’s an octave too low.

Letting several strings ring. Mute the others with your fingers and pluck one at a time.

Reading the needle the instant you pluck. The tuner measures about 20 times a second and shows the middle value of the last five readings. Let the note ring for a moment.

FAQ

Where do I tune a low-G string? On the main tuner page, set the tuning to "Chromatic (any note)"; it reads G3 directly.

Is my playing recorded? No. Sound is analyzed on this device only and is never recorded or sent anywhere.
