Start with the 6th (thickest) string and work across. Standard tuning is E2 A2 D3 G3 B3 E4.

How to use it

Turn on the mic and pluck one string at a time, from the low E2 to the high E4. The tuner picks the string closest to what it hears and shows you how far off you are. When the needle lands in the green center (within ±5 cents), it says "In tune."

If the note is flat, tighten the string (Tune up ↑). If it is sharp, loosen it (Tune down ↓). When you overshoot, a common habit is to go slightly below the note and come back up to it.

Tap a string name to hear its reference tone and lock the tuner to that string. Tap it again to go back to automatic. Half step down (E♭) is in the tuning list in the settings.

Getting the most out of it

After one pass, go around again from the first string. Tuning one string can nudge the others slightly.

Fresh strings drop in pitch a lot for the first while as they stretch and settle. That is normal; just retune before each session.

Try tuning by ear now and then. Tune with the 5th-fret method first, then check with the tuner to learn which way your ear tends to drift.

Even when the needle says in tune, play the same note on two strings together. If they differ slightly, you hear a wobble, and the faster the wobble, the bigger the gap. When it slows down until you can hardly notice it, the two strings match.

Common mistakes

Letting several strings ring. The tuner can’t tell which note to measure. Mute the strings you’re not tuning with your palm.

Plucking hard near the bridge. Plucking near the bridge brings out strong high overtones, which makes the needle jumpy. Pluck gently over the soundhole or toward the neck and watch while the note rings.

Forgetting a changed reference. Check that Reference A4 is set to 440 Hz. If you play with others, everyone needs the same reference.

FAQ

Is my playing recorded? No. Sound is analyzed on this device only and is never recorded or sent anywhere.

Does it work with an electric guitar? Yes, as long as the mic can hear the strings or the amp. Unplugged strings are quiet, so hold your phone close to the guitar.

The tuner picks the wrong string. A string that is far off can read closer to its neighbor. Tap the name of the string you’re tuning to lock the tuner to it.

What about other tunings? This page has standard and half step down. For anything else, open the main tuner page and choose "Chromatic (any note)" to tune by the nearest note name.
